State Seals & Summaries

Full-color seal of the State of Maine
[Maine state seal, included for illustration only.
This web site is not affiliated with the State of Maine in any way.]

While simplified versions of the colorful graphic above might appear on enameled spoons, black and white illustrations are mmore useful  for comparison with design elements rendered in sterling.

This directory of state seals can be used to help identify some spoons that lack a state name but contain all or part of a state seal. It was a common practice among spoon manufacturers to use just the graphic scene without the surrounding lettering from a state seal on their souvenir spoons. Similarly, it is not unusual to find state flowers or state mottos on souvenir spoons.

Mottos are taken from the state seal when one is included there and are translated into English if the seal version is in a foreign language. Some seals don't include a motto, in which case I have listed the motto from the Baltimore Sun's The World Almanac and Book of Facts (1990).
